Where Faith Meets Fiction

This blog is where faith and fiction come together, bringing the timeless truths of the Bible to life through storytelling, much like Jesus's parables, as He describes how the Kingdom of God is to work on the earth. Whether you’re navigating life’s challenges or seeking hope, you can find the inspiration you need to trust God’s promises and pivot toward His purposes for your life.

"God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself," 2 Corinthians 5:19. During the holiday season, we tend to feel the sting of grief more intensely. Grief is one of life’s most profound and challenging experiences. It is a journey that takes us through uncharted emotional terrain, testing our faith, strength, and endurance. For many, grief is not just about loss; it’s also about navigating the waves of anger, confusion, loneliness, and a deep yearning for meaning. Through Scripture and the journey of my character, Dr. Issa Stevens, in my book, Petra: An Unbroken Legacy, we explore these universal themes.

Dr. Issa’s journey includes a sudden, life-altering tragedy—the unexpected death of her husband. This devastating event leaves her grappling with emotions that many of us can relate to: sorrow, anger toward God, and a profound sense of loneliness. Her journey reflects a universal truth: in times of loss, our faith is often tested, but it’s also where we can experience the transformative power of God’s love and grace.

In this blog post, we’ll explore biblical lessons and practical applications inspired by Dr. Issa’s story. Whether you're navigating grief yourself or walking alongside someone who is, this exploration offers hope, encouragement, and tools to strengthen your faith.

  1. God Welcomes Our Honest Emotions

One of the first challenges Dr. Issa faces is reconciling her anger toward God. Like many of us, she wonders, "Why did this happen? How could a loving God allow such pain?"

The Bible shows us that God is not afraid of our honest emotions. Consider the Psalms, where David repeatedly pours out his heart to God:

  • "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?" (Psalm 22:1)
  • "I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears." (Psalm 6:6)

These raw, vulnerable prayers remind us that God invites us to bring our pain, questions, and even anger to Him. He is not distant or disinterested. On the contrary, Psalm 34:18 assures us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Practical Takeaway:

When grief overwhelms you, don’t suppress your emotions. Instead, pour out your heart to God in prayer. Write your thoughts in a journal, pray aloud, or simply sit in silence, knowing that God hears and understands.

Reflection:

Have you ever felt hesitant to share your true feelings with God? What would it look like to approach Him with complete honesty this week?

  1. Loneliness Can Lead to Deeper Dependence on God

After her husband’s death, Dr. Issa experiences an isolating loneliness. Friends and family offer support, but nothing fills the void left by her loss. This loneliness, however, becomes a turning point in her faith journey.

Scripture reminds us that God is always present, even when we feel alone:

  • "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)
  • "The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me." (Psalm 23:1, 4)

Through her loneliness, Dr. Issa learns to lean fully on God. She discovers that while human relationships are valuable, they cannot replace the companionship and comfort of her Creator.

Practical Takeaway:

Use seasons of loneliness as an opportunity to draw closer to God. Spend time in prayer, meditate on His Word, and invite His presence into your daily life. Let Him fill the spaces that no one else can.

Reflection:

How can you intentionally seek God’s presence when you feel lonely? What practices help you feel connected to Him?

  1. God Is Still Writing Your Story

In her grief, Dr. Issa is tempted to believe that her best days are behind her. But God shows her that her story is far from over. In Romans 8:28, we are reminded, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Dr. Issa’s journey echoes this promise. Through her pain, she begins to see how God is shaping her character, deepening her faith, and preparing her for new purposes.

Practical Takeaway:

Grief is not the end of your story. Trust that God is at work, even in your pain, bringing beauty from ashes. Reflect on how He has been faithful in the past and cling to His promises for the future.

Reflection:

What steps can you take to trust God’s plan for your life, even when it’s hard to see the bigger picture?

Encouragements from Dr. Issa’s Story

  1. Grief Doesn’t Have to Define You: Dr. Issa’s story reminds us that while grief is a part of life, it doesn’t have to consume us. With God’s help, we can find healing and purpose beyond our pain.
  2. God Can Redeem Brokenness: Just as God used Dr. Issa’s loss to strengthen her faith and inspire others, He can use our struggles for His glory and our growth.
  3. Hope is Always Within Reach: No matter how dark life feels, God’s light shines brighter. Isaiah 61:3 speaks of giving "a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair."

Discussion Questions for Personal or Group Study

  1. How can you be honest with God about your emotions while still trusting His goodness?
  2. In what ways can loneliness deepen your dependence on God?
  3. Reflect on a time when you experienced God’s faithfulness during a difficult season. How did that shape your faith?

Types of Grief

There are various types of grief people may experience beyond the loss of a loved one:

  1. Loss of a Job or Career: Grieving the loss of financial stability, professional identity, or future plans tied to a specific career path.
  2. Loss of an Opportunity: Feeling sorrow for missed chances, unfulfilled dreams, or the "what could have been."
  3. Infidelity: Grieving the loss of trust, the sense of betrayal, and the rupture of a relationship’s foundation.
  4. Loss of Health: Coping with the grief of a diagnosis, chronic illness, or physical limitations that alter one's way of life.
  5. Divorce or Separation: Mourning the end of a relationship, shared dreams, and the family unit as it was known.
  6. Loss of Identity: Struggling with changes in self-concept due to life transitions, failures, or societal expectations.
  7. Empty Nest: Experiencing grief as children grow up, leave home, and shift family dynamics.
  8. Loss of a Friendship: Feeling grief over estranged or broken relationships, even without a formal ending.
  9. Relocation: Mourning the loss of community, familiarity, and comfort tied to a previous place of residence.
  10. Loss of a Pet: Deeply grieving the companionship and love of a beloved animal.
  11. Unrealized Parenthood: Coping with infertility, miscarriage, or the loss of a child’s future dreams.
  12. Cultural or Community Loss: Grieving changes or disconnection from cultural roots or community traditions.
  13. Grief for the World: Feeling sorrow for global events, environmental destruction, or societal injustices.
  14. Loss of a Phase of Life: Mourning the end of a chapter, such as youth, singleness, or a particular role in life.
  15. Anticipatory Grief: Grieving a loss that has not yet occurred but is expected, such as with terminal illness.

Each form of grief is unique and deeply personal. Wherever the source of grief comes from, Dr. Issa’s story is a testament to God’s power to transform our pain into purpose. Her journey reflects the truth that while grief is inevitable, hope is always available. Whatever you’re facing today, remember that God is with you. He welcomes your honesty, walks with you in loneliness, and is faithfully writing your story.

As we close this reflection, take a moment to thank God for His unchanging presence and love. Ask Him to help you see His hand at work in your life, even in hardship. And above all, trust that He is making all things new. While this can be difficult during the holidays amid the celebrations, the gatherings, and the gift-giving, remember the greatest gift of all—Jesus, was born to bring you hope, peace, joy, and salvation. “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength,” Nehemiah 8:10.
